Instructions
Combine ingredients (except alcohol) in a large saucepan or slow cooker.
Bring just to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low. Do not boil.
Simmer gently for 30–40 minutes to allow flavors to develop.
Stir in vodka or liqueur just before serving, if using.
Strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth.
Serve warm in mugs or heat-safe glasses with optional garnish.
